How does one know that they're hearing from God? How do you know you're not subconsciously slapping a "God-sent" label on your own idea?
If you're married, God will not tell you one thing and your spouse another. Okay, one of you could be hearing from God, but for as long as your spouse is resisting, it's still a red light. Unless your the head of the household, and then, buddy, you'd better be sure.
God will never tell you to do something that contradicts His written Word (the Bible, just in case that's not obvious.) Read the Bible, really read it, and find out what it says. When you think one thing and the Bible say another, you're wrong. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Pray and talk to God about what you think He's saying to you. He'll confirm His direction, usually through three venues: the Bible, other people, or circumstances.
You'll have no peace if you're not staying when He wants you to stay, or leaving when He wants you to go.
When God's leading, doors will fly open faster than the automatic doors at Walmart. If you have to pry open the doors yourself and maneuver obstacles, its not God.
Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit, not only as a companion and promise toward the day we're united with Him in eternity, He also gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us. He might lead through a thought out-of-the-blue, or a tug in your spirit-man, but trust me, if the Holy Spirit is speaking to you and you've postured yourself to hear from and obey God, you won't forget about it, and you won't be able to rest until you do it. In fact, I'm persuaded that if you belong to God and seek His will above your own, it will be very hard to get it wrong, and stay in the wrong.
Some scriptures I turn to when I need to hear from God...
"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." John 10:27
"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6
When have you felt God speaking to you, and how did you know it was God?
